What is a Transducer?

Transducer or sensor is a device that converts various non-electric quantities into another physical quantity (generally electricity) that is convenient for processing and transmission according to certain rules.

Composition: generally includes sensitive components, conversion components and measurement circuits, and sometimes requires an auxiliary power supply.


1) Sensitive components: Not all non-electricity can be directly converted into electricity, and sometimes it needs to be converted into another non-electricity that is easy to become electricity, and then converted into electricity. The device that completes the pre-transformation is also called a pre-converter, such as various elastic components.


2) Conversion element: a device that directly converts the sensed non-electricity into electricity, such as piezoelectric crystals, thermocouples, etc. Sensing and switching elements can sometimes be combined into one.


3) Signal conditioning and conversion circuit: amplify and convert the electrical signal output by the conversion element into a signal that is easy to process, display and record. Commonly used bridge circuits, high impedance input circuits and oscillator circuits


4) Auxiliary power supply: provide energy for the sensor. Sensors that require an external power supply are passive sensors, such as resistive, inductive, and capacitive sensors; those that do not require an external power supply are active sensors, such as piezoelectric sensors and thermocouples.


What is a Piezoelectric Transducer?

A piezoelectric transducer is a sensor that converts mechanical pressure or strain into an electrical signal. It utilizes the piezoelectric effect, the phenomenon in which certain crystalline materials become polarized when subjected to mechanical pressure or stress, resulting in a change in charge or voltage. Piezoelectric sensors generally consist of piezoelectric materials, electrodes, and support structures.


Piezoelectric materials are usually piezoelectric crystals, such as quartz, lead zirconate titanate, etc. These materials have special crystal structures and polarization properties. When subjected to external pressure or stress, the distribution of positive and negative charges inside the crystal will change, resulting in charge or voltage changes.


Ultrasonic Transducer


The electrodes of a piezoelectric transducer are used to collect and direct a charge or voltage change. Typically, electrodes are placed on either side of the piezoelectric material, and when the piezoelectric material is subjected to pressure or stress, the electrodes detect a change in charge or voltage.


The support structure is used to support and protect the piezoelectric material and electrodes. It is usually made of a mechanical material with enough rigidity and pressure resistance to ensure that the piezoelectric material will function properly when it is subjected to pressure or stress.


Piezoelectric transducers have the advantages of high sensitivity, wide measurement range, fast response and low power consumption. They are widely used in fields such as industrial automation, instrumentation, medical equipment, automotive engineering and aerospace. Common piezoelectric transducers include pressure transducers, force transducers, acceleration sensors and pressure micro force sensors.

1. High sensitivity: The piezoelectric sensor has high sensitivity and can accurately sense small pressure changes.


2. Wide working range: Piezoelectric sensors can work in a wide range of pressures, from a few Pascals to several megapascals.


3. Fast response: The response speed of the piezoelectric sensor is very fast, which can detect the change of pressure in real time.


4. High resolution: Due to its high sensitivity, piezoelectric sensors are able to provide high-resolution pressure measurements.


5. No need for energy: Piezoelectric sensors are passive sensors that do not require external energy supply and can directly convert pressure into electrical signals.
